Dr-Melvin-Hanzel

Melvin Hanzel, D.M.D.

General Dentistry

Dr. Melvin Hanzel is a native Rhode Islander who began practicing dentistry with his father, Dr. Harold Hanzel, in 1979. He was born in Providence and was raised in Warwick, RI.

Dr. Hanzel has a BA in biology from the University of Rhode Island and a DMD from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He completed a 2-year residency in general practice dentistry at The Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn NY. During his tenure at Brookdale, he was the Chief Resident in Dentistry from 1978-1979. Brookdale is a teaching hospital of NYU School of Dental Medicine and Dr. Hanzel was a clinical instructor at NYU.

Dr. Hanzel is on the staff of Rhode Island Hospital and has been the Dental Consultant for the hemophilia center since 1982. He is a member of The American Dental Association, The Rhode Island Dental Association, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He has extensive training in sedation dentistry and implant dentistry. He also has extensive training in treating medically compromised patients. His hospital training provided him with a strong background in internal medicine, implant dentistry, sedation dentistry, oral surgery, and root canal treatment. Dr. Hanzel also enjoys cosmetic dentistry and placing tooth-colored fillings (without mercury or silver).

Dr. Hanzel enjoys golf, playing the trumpet as well as practicing dentistry.

During his 30+ years of practice, Dr. Hanzel has made the needs and goals of his patients a priority. Treatment is always provided in an understanding and caring manner. We treat patients not teeth and our entire philosophy is driven with this in mind.

Dr. Hanzel takes great pride in treating patients using sedation. He finds this form of treatment gratifying because he is able to comfortably treat patients who found it impossible to previously have dental care.

Dr. Hanzel’s unique approach to dentistry provides total oral healthcare. We treat patients in a personal and professional manner. Because of our unique approach, we are often able to salvage teeth that were previously deemed unrestorative. This is accomplished with overdentures and precision attachments. We often make partial dentures that do not have metallic clasps which are cosmetic and natural-looking. We use a combination of art, science, and engineering to achieve beautiful long-lasting results.

He was a clinical instructor at Boston University School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics under Dr. Gerald Kramer from 1975-79. Over the past 35 years, he has held numerous other academic positions and lectured on emerging dental techniques.

Dr. Glick was at the forefront of implant technology and in 1985 was one of the first dentists in the area to receive accreditation to provide patients with this innovative new dental technology.
