Oral Appliances
For patients who cannot tolerate CPAP or for those with mild to moderate sleep apnea, oral appliance therapy is an excellent option.
If your sleep physician decides that oral appliance therapy is the best treatment option for you, he or she will write a prescription for a custom-made oral appliance. There are over 100 oral appliances of various designs that have been accepted by the FDA. Patients often like oral appliances because they are quiet, comfortable, easy to wear, and are convenient for travel.
Oral appliances work by manipulating the lower jaw and tongue away from the back of the throat, preventing blockages and opening the airway so that you can sleep better. Since obstructive sleep apnea is considered a serious health risk, many medical insurances cover some of the costs associated with medical treatment.
