LANAP® FAQs

Important Facts about Laser Treatment

Gum-Disease-and-Men

The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) is a fairly new technology that many patients are unfamiliar with. In fact, most do not even know how a dental laser works. In order to educate our patients, we have put together a list of frequently asked questions regarding laser treatment.

Q: What is the difference between periodontal disease and gum disease?

A: Gum disease is a broad term for gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a fairly minor condition in which bacteria and plaque buildup along the gum line and cause tissue inflammation. Over time, the bacteria can spread to other areas and cause the infection to worsen. Once the deeper tissue levels and bone are affected and detachment begins to occur, it becomes periodontal disease.

Q: What makes LANAP® less painful than traditional gum surgery?

A: Traditional gum surgery requires the use of blades to cut and remove diseased tissue. It is often necessary to remove large amounts of healthy tissue as well in order to gain access to the diseased portions. This can be quite uncomfortable for the patient. LANAP®, on the other hand, uses a highly sophisticated dental laser to vaporize only the diseased areas. Healthy tissue, bone, and teeth are left untouched. This makes LANAP® less invasive and minimally painful.

Q: Are there any other advantages?

A: Yes. In addition to minimal discomfort, a dental laser can reduce bleeding, stimulate regrowth, and shorten healing times. This makes LANAP® more predictable in the long run by minimizing the risk of infection and future tooth loss.

Q: How do I know that LANAP® is safe?

A: There is a huge body of research available to prove the effectiveness of a dental laser in treating gum disease. Our dentists will gladly share their credentials with you and address any concerns that you may have.
