CAD/CAM Technology

CAD/CAM Technology allows dentists to restore teeth by putting crowns in place, replacing defective fillings, and placing veneers in just a single appointment.

About the Procedure

Almost everybody gets a cavity at some point in their life. Unfortunately, many fillings, especially those of the past, are made from metal and can be quite unattractive to look at. They can also break down over time, causing additional decay that may weaken the tooth if they are not replaced by your dentist. That’s why we use CAD/CAM technology to replace fillings and restore decayed teeth with crowns, veneers, onlays, and inlays. Your teeth can be restored to their natural appearance in just a single office visit!

How does it work?

Once your dentist has decided on the best treatment method, your tooth and the surrounding area are numbed to minimize pain and discomfort. Then, any weak or decayed portions of the tooth are removed to make room for the restoration piece.

The next step in the process is to make an Optical Impression of the tooth. This is different than a normal impression in that it uses a camera, rather than a putty-like material, to make the impression. This step is short and only takes a few minutes.

Finally, with the help of CAD/CAM technology, your doctor will create your restoration piece using 3D software to convert the digital image of your tooth into a 3-dimensional model. Once the restoration piece has been designed with a computer program, the data is sent to a milling machine within the facility. A ceramic block is then placed in the machine and your brand new restoration piece is created in just 10 to 20 minutes time. As soon as your dentist polishes and bonds it to your tooth, you are ready to go!
