What to Expect At Your First Oral Surgery Visit

At your first visit to Oral Surgery of Rhode Island, your oral surgeon, Dr. Judson Dacher-Shapiro, will work directly with you to diagnose your oral and/or maxillofacial surgical needs and create an individualized treatment plan. Your comprehensive exam will typically last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

In some cases, Dr. Shapiro is able to perform surgery during the same appointment. Depending on the treatment needs, one or more follow-up appointment(s) will be necessary. Dr. Shapiro will outline your treatment timeline and determine the best course of action with you for your optimal outcomes.

Referral Slip

Your referring doctor or dentist will provide you with a referral slip for Oral Surgery or can access our Online Referral Form by clicking the button below. If you can, please bring the referral slip with you to your first appointment.

Recent X-Rays

Digital X-rays performed recently by your doctor or dentist are essential at your initial visit to provide a diagnosis and design a treatment plan. Your provider can send them to our office, or you can bring them to your visit. 

Medication List

Please bring a list of all your current medications and any pre-existing conditions. This will aid us in best understanding your treatment needs and designing a safe, appropriate, and personalized care plan.

Medical & Dental Insurance IDs

Our team at Oral Surgery of Rhode Island will help you navigate your insurance benefits and understand your dental coverage. Please be sure to bring your current Insurance Benefits ID Card to your first visit.

Other Important Information

• All patients under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present with them during the consultation and at future appointments

• If your planned treatment requires IV sedation, you will require a preoperative consultation and a physical exam.
• Your physical exam will be utilized to qualify you as healthy for IV sedation.
• For patients who will receive IV sedation, please avoid food and drink for at least 8 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time.

• In case of emergency, please contact Oral Surgery of Rhode Island as quickly as possible and explain your situation. We do our best to see dental emergencies on the same day or the next day.
